We passed along the story to you Monday about Amare Stoudemire using and expletive and a derogatory word for gay in a direct message response on twitter to a fan who had used some other choice words in telling Stoudemire that he needed to “make up for last season.”

The fan them took a screen shot of Stoudemire’s message (visible only to the recipient of the message) and put it out there on twitter. Stoudemire later apologized to the fan.

The league still came down on Stoudemire with a $50,000 fine for “using offensive and derogatory language in a Twitter message.”

The lesson again for athletes — twitter is public. Very public. Look at it this way, anything you type on twitter should be something you would say to a reporter. Twitter is a great way to reach fans and break down walls but you have to be careful, this isn’t an IM with your high school friend.
