Isiah Thomas releases statement on Dream Team

I hope you watched the NBA TV Dream Team documentary on Wednesday night, because it’s good storytelling. A fantastic reminder of how great those players were and how that moment changed basketball.

One of the more interesting part of it was Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen saying they didn’t want Isiah Thomas on the team. There was no argument from people up the ladder who seemed to have issues with Thomas.  If it were purely about his game, Thomas would have been on the team — he is one of the best point guards to ever play the game. But he burned a lot of bridges, which if you watched his career after playing it’s not that hard to believe.

Wednesday night, Thomas released a statement taking the high road.

“Today, like all Americans, I congratulate the Dream Team on their anniversary. I am proud of my career in the NBA and have fond memories of going head-to-head with all the members of the team. I can’t speak to the selection process as I wasn’t involved. But 20 years later, their gold medal is still a momentous achievement.”
