Kobe says he’d choose LeBron if he could pick a teammate

Kobe Bryant is a scorer. Which is why getting Chris Paul — a playmaker who sets others up as well as anyone in the game — made a lot of sense to Kobe. It made less sense to David Stern (and other NBA owners) and so that trade got shot down.

Wednesday Kobe was talking trades — he said he expects the Lakers management will try to do something but refused to speculate on what — when reporters asked him who would be his ideal teammate of current players. Kobe went another direction than the Dwight Howard response most might have suggested. From ESPNLosAngeles.com.

“It’s a tough question because I’ve played with a lot of great players being on the Olympic team,” Bryant said. “I think that the player I would probably play with the most where the pieces would fit would be myself and LeBron [James], believe it or not, because he’s more of a facilitator and I’m more of a scorer. … He’s a modern version of what Oscar [Robertson] was. He just puts up genius numbers.”

It would be interesting to see how LeBron’s “I want the game to be fun” mentality would blend with Kobe’s drive and demeanor. And by interesting I mean like sitting around waiting for the volcano to erupt, covering Los Angeles in ash as if it were Pompeii.

But on the court, it could really work. Kobe’s right. Well, as long as Kobe would trust LeBron more than he seems to trust Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol late in games.
