Kobe Bryant believes someone else will score 81. Someday.

You’re going to be hearing a lot about Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game a lot in the next month, as the 50th anniversary of the occasion comes up on us.

But you can put me in the group that think’s Kobe Bryant’s 81 point game is more impressive because he did it into the natural flow of the game when his team had to come from behind (we don’t want to get into how Wilt’s teammates fouled so they could get the ball back and feed him).

Nobody is going to score 100 points in an NBA game again. But could someone else get to 81? Since we were talking about Kobe’s scoring already, ESPNLosAngeles.com asked Bryant himself.

“I believe so,” Bryant said when asked if any player would ever join him and Chamberlain with a matching single-game scoring outburst. “One day it will happen.”

The gut reaction is that nobody else will ever be able to match that kind of scoring. Kobe has the ability to take over a game like few who have ever walked on a court. Who is going to bring Kobe’s fire? Wilt’s dominance?

But there is always another great player. They will not be Wilt or Kobe or MJ or LeBron, but they will come. And one night the circumstances will be right and the player will be hot and we’ll be wondering if he can reach the bar these legends have set.

And someone will.
