Manu Ginobili to have hand surgery, out 6-8 weeks

The San Antonio Spurs are going to have to get by without their best player for a couple weeks longer than they thought.

Ginobili is going to have surgery on his broken hand Thursday and will be out six to eight weeks, coach Gregg Popovich announced, tweets Mike Monroe of the Express-News. Ginobili tweeted that plates and screws will be put into his hand to repair the bone.

Ginobili broke his hand in a freak accident Monday night reaching in to slap the ball away from Anthony Tolliver of the Timberwolves.

The Spurs are 3-2 right now and will have to find a way to play about .500 ball without Ginobili to make sure they make the playoffs. If they fall behind it will be hard to climb back into a crowded Western Conference playoff picture even with Ginobili.

The problem is that in the past when one of the Spurs “big three” went down the other two stepped up and filled in the gap. Tim Duncan may not be able to physically do that anymore and even if he could the condensed schedule will wear on the Spurs. San Antonio has six games in eight days starting Wednesday against Golden State and has six back-to-backs in the next month alone.
