Portland’s Brandon Roy will return to games this week

So much for taking the remainder of the season off to rest.

Brandon Roy has been cleared by Doctors to return to practice just three weeks after double knee surgery and he should be back playing with the Trail Blazers by this weekend, according to Jason Quick of the Oregonian.

“For sure against Detroit (Sunday), and maybe for Toronto (Friday),’’ Roy said Monday. “I’m excited. I feel pretty good.’’

Roy wants to come off the bench to start.

“I haven’t played since Dec. 15, so I want to play with some guys and get a feel,’’ Roy said. “I need to get my legs back and my rhythm back.’’

Roy had both knees scoped Jan. 17. The surgery was deemed successful but the man has virtually no cartilage left in his knees so there is only so much the doctors can do anymore. His knees are never going to be 100 percent again.

There was talk of him taking the entire season off to rest them — why rush back to battle for one of the last playoff spots in the West when what they really need is him to get right again? He might not be the same old guy next season but he’d be closer.

But that’s not Roy’s personality. He is a competitor. He wants to be back. The Blazers were the eighth seed heading into Monday night by just half a game ahead of Memphis. He wants to win and get this team to the playoffs.
