According to a report by The Dallas Morning News, the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks have been discussing a deal that would send center Brendan Haywood to Miami in a sign-and-trade deal. In exchange for Haywood, the Heat would be more than happy to send Jermaine O’Neal to Dallas in a sign-and-trade or give them former #2 pick Michael Beasley.
The Heat have also been in discussions with the Jazz. As of right now, those discussions have centered around a possible Jermaine O’Neal-Carlos Boozer sign-and-trade. The Heat’s motivation for this deal is obvious. Even if Miami does manage to keep Dwayne Wade and convince a Chris Bosh or Carlos Boozer to play with him, the Heat still wouldn’t have a center who could grab rebounds, defend the rim, and convert easy chances inside. Haywood does all of those things, and would represent a significant upgrade over Joel Anthony, the only center the Heat currently have under contract.
