Tom Thibodeau, whose brilliant defensive schemes been a crucial part of the Celtics’ 6-game series victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers and 2-0 series lead against the Orlando Magic, is reportedly a finalist for the head coaching position in New Orleans. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Monty Williams and Thibodeau are the favorites for the job now that the Hornets have reportedly soured on former Dallas head coach and current ESPN analyst Avery Johnson.
Before serving as Boston’s defensive coordinator, Thibodeau was an assistant under Jeff Van Gundy for both the Rockets and the Knicks. Wherever Thibodeau has gone in the last decade or so, great defense has followed. While he’s never been an NBA head coach before, his resume as an assistant is absolutely beyond reproach. With Thibodeau getting New Orleans’ defense in shape and a healthy Chris Paul running the offense, New Orleans could get back on track sooner than you think. For all the potential big free agency pairings this off-season, CP3 and Thibodeau joining forces could be as effective as the pairing of any two players.
