Celtics pick up Tony Gaffney

If a team is picking up a player now, it’s more about a body for practice and getting a look at him for maybe a roster spot next year.

Tony Gaffney is getting that look from the Boston Celtics. The former University of Massachusetts star is expected to sign a deal today.

Gaffney is a favorite of player development specialist and ESPN.com writer David Thorpe, who helped with his training. Gaffney played with the Lakers last Summer League and through their training camp this year, where he made it to the final cut down. The Lakers coaching staff wanted to keep him, but already carrying the league’s highest payroll the team did not add him (doing so even at a minimum salary would have added more than $1 million to the Lakers bottom like due to the luxury tax).

Gaffney played this season for Hapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon club in Israel, until he injured his foot. At that point he left the team to come back to the United States for treatment. Apparently it is well enough that the Celtics will give him a look.
