NBA FanHouse spoke with Richard Jefferson last night and the aging versatile forward who has struggled this season is considering opting out of the last year of his deal and joining the free agent frenzy of 2010.
That sound you’re hearing is that of Spurs fans roaring in excitement.
Jefferson claims that he’s willing to drop the $15 million owed to him next season in order to cash in on a big extension that guarantees him security in the long-term. Not mentioned in the article is the effect of the CBA negotiations next summer, but that undoubtedly has an effect, as both the amount of the cap and max number of years will be affected by the new agreement.
Jefferson has recently started to meld with the Spurs and has been a huge part of their resurgence late in the season. But turning 30 this summer, combined with his jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none status would likely shove him down the prospective list. Then again, with so many teams clearing space to make moves, the market may be available.
This is great news for the Spurs. If the Spurs were to make a significant, deep run in the playoffs, they could re-sign Jefferson if the market were to disappoint, and if they don’t, they could get out of his $15 million and get back under the luxury tax.
We’ll have to see if Jefferson is really willing to drop $15 million in pursuit of his future.
