A few weeks ago, Stephen Jackson got into it post-game with Paul Pierce after a Bobcats loss to the Celtics. Jackson made references to the Celtics not respecting the Bobcats as men. Okay, no big deal. The Celtics have quite the history of being pompous and abrasive. That kind of thing is their bag, baby.
But now we have this from the Bobcats’ win over the Heat this week. Dwyane Wade post-game, via Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer:
“The ball wouldn’t go in the basket,” Wade said of his team’s 5-of-17
shooting, including his own 0-of-5. “I ain’t giving Charlotte no
credit, if that’s what you’re looking for.”
So now you have two different teams with problems with the Cats. Kind of interesting. Is there something about the Cats that creates a chippy atmosphere? Or are they just kind of tired of people not respecting them? I mean, I get what Wade’s saying above. He’s a competitor and hates to admit that he’s beat. But to say that the Bobcats’ defense didn’t have any impact on the game is a little ridiculous, no?
The Bobcats are pretty well disrespected across the board. Mainstream writers talk about how screwed they are long-term. They’re never on national television. Yet they play tremendous defense and when they’re on, they’re a brutal team to play. Maybe this lack of respect from other teams is just a difficulty to adjust to a new reality: the Bobcats are pretty good.
