Movie directors need to be passionate about their subject for the work to be any good.
Steve Nash is passionate about Terry Fox.
Which is what should make Nash’s directorial debut interesting. Nash and his production company have made “Into the Wind” about Fox for part of ESPN’s fantastic 30 for 30 series.
Terry Fox was a national obsession in Canada in 1980, he ran from one end of the country to the other on an artificial leg to raise money for cancer awareness.
He never made it — two thirds of the way across the country new tumors were discovered. Fox died a year later. Nash, about to start training camp with the Phoenix Suns, talked about all that recently in an interview on NBA.com.
Nash said on a conference call Wednesday he was fascinated by “the conflict between being this humble, quiet kid who wanted to shy away from the spotlight, and at the same time his quest was built on attention.”
Into the Wind debuts next Tuesday, September 28 at 8 p.m. on ESPN and will air several times through the week.
