No, Yao Ming cannot be voted in as starting center one last time. Probably.
For the second time in seven years, the NBA All-Star game will be headed back to Houston, this time for the 2013 game, the league officially announced Wednesday. Houston also was host to the 2006 game.
“Houston is a spectacular sports city, and for one week it will be the basketball capital of the world,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a released statement. “NBA All-Star is a magnificent celebration of our game, and I want to thank the city and the Rockets for welcoming us once again.”
The game will take place on Feb. 17. The entire weekend of festivities will be broadcast on TNT.
This year’s All-Star Weekend will take place in Orlando, at the new Amway Center, Feb. 24-26.
If you’re wondering why your city has not gotten it, cities have to request the game and prove they can handle the crowds, Fan Fest and the rest of it. Not every city wants or has the facilities (such as a convention hall space next to the arena) to handle it.
My bet for 2014 — Brooklyn and the Nets new Barclay Center. Just a guess, but they do want it.
The 2012 All-Star Game will be at the brand new Amway Center in Orlando. Well, if there is a 2012 All-Star Game (remember last lockout the All-Star Game was a casualty to the owners and players greed).
There will be one by 2013, and it looks like we may be going back deep into the heart of Texas.
MyFoxHouston is reporting the Toyota Center will again host the games in 2013, as it did in 2006 (hat tip to Eye on Basketball).
NBA sources told FOX 26 Sports the Houston Rockets and the City of Houston landed the NBA All-Star Game in 2013.
The game will be played at Toyota Center on Feb. 17, 2013. NBA All-Star week will be Feb. 15-17.
The 2006 experience got mixed reviews from event attendees. The NBA (like the NFL does with the Super Bowl) likes to keep the event in a warm-weather city most years because this is a three-day long party that includes some outdoor events and concerts. Hence Los Angeles this past season and Orlando next season (if there is a next season). The league even went to Las Vegas once even though there is no NBA team there (never again by the way, the locals hated it).
That said, in the next couple years expect the new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn to grab one game.
