Well, that was… not a basketball game. It was for a good quarter. Croatia’s national team actually held a 19-18 lead on Team USA early in their opener of FIBA play. And then, well, Team USA showed that stars or no stars, they have talent, they are prepared, and they can absolutely dominate over lesser opponents.
Team USA routed Croatia today in impressive fashion, going on a 50-14 run at one point and clobbering them 106-78. Stats? USA shot 55.4% from the field, including 40% from the arc. They had 22 assists to only 9 from Croatia. Kevin Durant led Team USA with 14 points. Eric Gordon showed up huge with 16 points on 4 of 6 shooting from downtown. Kevin Love received significant minutes and wound up with 10 rebounds and several of his patented awesome outlet passes. Russell Westbrook did what Russell Westbrook does, exploding to the basket and getting massive jams.
Bojan Bogdanovic had 17 points and 5 rebounds for Croatia, and Marko Popovic had 16.
The big concern for Team USA has to be rebounding. Love was terrific, but Tyson Chandler finished with 0, and Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay, and Lamar Odom finished with 12 combined. There aren’t many huge teams in the tournament, but if USA hits a team-wide cold streak, it could get tricky if the bigs don’t step up.
Team USA plays Slovenia tomorrow, which should make for some entertainment with Goran Dragic.
