Really, this is a controversy? LeBron in an Akron T-shirt?

The photo of LeBron James at the right (the full length version is below) is basically a Rorschach test about what you think of LeBron.

Here are the facts: LeBron tweeted this photo of himself with two young children who did something very sweet — they raised money at a lemonade stand in Akron and donated it to LeBron’s foundation.

What irritated some was what LeBron is wearing — a T-shirt saying Akron (his home town) in the Miami Heat font, and a Heat hat. (Nike made the shirt by the way, bet they sold a dozen of those.)

Is LeBron clueless to what the masses (and many in Akron) think? Maybe. Is he just a slave to Nike. Maybe. Does he not care what any of you think? Probably. Is this really something worth getting worked up over. No.

Man, I can’t wait for the lockout to be over.

Timofey Mozgov, your New York Knicks starting center. Could happen.

Russian import Timofey Mozgov could be the starting center when the New York Knicks open the season in Toronto in two weeks.

No, we’re not kidding. He will start for sure Monday against the Celtics — which would have been a good test if Shaq played, however he is resting — but if he keeps passing his tests he could be the opening night starter, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.

Who else you going to play? Ronny Turiaf? You are going to be hard pressed to find many bigger Turiaf supporters than yours truly, but he is a back up. He is a great energy big-man off the bench for 15-20 a game. He is not a starter.

Eddy Curry? Ha.

Mozgov is a guy who is very adept at the high pick-and-roll that is so crucial to Mike D’Antoni’s offense. He has good offensive movement and touch. The questions are can he defend and board better than Turiaf, and can he stay out of foul trouble. Boston should be a good test for those things.

Ultimately the five spot is something the Knicks need to upgrade, but in the short term Mozgov is going to get his shot. What he does with it will be something to watch for a couple weeks.

LeBron's long time girlfriend not loving Miami but she is stepping out of the cold

James_brinson.jpgSavannah Brinson does not come off as a woman ready to go on “Basketball Wives.”

She sounds like a woman comfortable with herself and her role in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. But don’t confuse that with her loving the idea of moving to Miami.

“Personally, Miami was not my favorite place. Vacationing there is great: You go for three days and get some sun, and it’s time to go home,” she explains. But the weather helped win her over. “When they told me it doesn’t get any colder than 50 degrees, that sold me. We get below-zero weather in Cleveland. … I can’t wait to have a sunny Christmas,” she says. “It will definitely be an adjustment, but we’ll make it. We’re not complaining.”

Brinson lived in the shadows in a way she can’t anymore. She sounds like she is becoming comfortable with that. But she is not leaving her roots, either.

She and LeBron’s two sons will spend much of the winter in Cleveland, where his oldest son will start school in the fall.

“Cleveland is home,” she says. “Nothing is going to change about that.”

What about the distance between LeBron and Brinson this will cause?

Some cynics might argue that long distance and superstar athlete equals disaster. And if VH1’s hit series Basketball Wives is to be believed, Miami groupies are as gorgeous as they are aggressive. Fresh from the Midwest and flush with cash, James could be quite the target. (His Miami signing deal reportedly netted him $110 million over six years, as well as an estimated $30 million in endorsements from brands like Nike.) But Brinson isn’t nervous about their partnership. “I’m not worried,” she declares, sounding assured. “We’re good. Our relationship is good.”

People close to LeBron have said he needs to feel that sense of home, that sense of comfort, and that is important to him. (Those same people said they were surprised at how LeBron handled his decision and the publicity and show around it.) Brinson seems to provide that comfort.

Video: LeBron speaks in Akron, expressing his love for Cleveland

Here’s the video, LeBron James speaking in Akron at his annual bike-a-thon for charity. He says all the right things.

Clevelanders would like to remind you that actions speak louder than words.

LeBron not only shows up for Akron event, but doesn't get booed into oblivion

In the aftermath of “The Decision,” a few Cleveland fans emerged from the rubble. Stumbling, mumbling to themselves, they asked a question, “Wait, LeBron’s got charity events in Akron in a few weeks. Is he even going to be able to show his face there?”

The question, apparently, is a resounding yes.

LeBron’s King for Kids Bikeathon went on as scheduled Saturday morning, and the Akron Beacon Journal’s Jason Lloyd was in attendance. There was, unsurprisingly, lower attendance for the event, but no extra security was added. The question would be how the crowd reacted to James’ arrival.

Cheers. Even some signs about Akron still loving the King.

There was talk of how James would be unable to show his face in Akron, again. But just as James himself had always alluded to, pointing out very clearly he was from Akron, and not Cleveland, there appears to be a disconnect between the two Ohio cities. The thought process that links the two is often from places outside of Cleveland, larger cities that don’t compete with another zipcode in-state. After all, Kansas City and St. Louis don’t much care what happens to the other, nor does Dallas get worked up if Houston gets the short stick. There’s a matter of public pride for your state, sure, but James also put Akron on the map, and thanked them publicly in the infamous Cleveland-omitted letter.

James is from Akron, Ohio. And while he can never return to Cleveland in peace, probably, apparently you can go home again. And bike, while you’re at it.

UPDATE: James actually publicly thanked the city of Cleveland in his remarks there. So prepare to hear about that for the rest of the day.
