30 years ago today Dr. J was flying

Dr. J was graceful. The game in the 1970s into the 1980s was evolving, Magic was just bringing Showtime and up tempo to the sport. It was moving from grinding toward beautiful (despite a setback in the 1990s). Guys were really just starting to play above the rim consistently (there had been a few guys, but that was about to explode).

Dr. J was ahead of his time, paving the way for the high flying acts of today. When he made this shot on May 11, 1980, in the NBA Finals, nobody had seen anything like it. (And yes, they used to finish the season a month earlier. Crazy idea.)

It is one of basketball’s iconic moments. One that should be savored

The 1980 NBA Finals: Back when the Sixers were good, but Magic was better

Just for fun Mother’s Day Sunday trip down memory lane. Here is a look back at the 1980s NBA Finals. It gave us two iconic moments, one the Dr. J behind the backboard scoop shot, and then Magic Johnson’s Game 6 at center.

Relax and enjoy a little trip back down memory lane to when the Sixers were good, while you wait for the Cavaliers and Celtics to get it on.
