Joel Embiid says he signed contract with Sixers, but team not ready to announce it just yet

Joel Embiid has been extremely active on Twitter this summer, but has mostly stuck with comedy, at least until now.

His most recent effort there, however, may have broken some news that the Sixers weren’t quite ready to announce.

From Bob Cooney of Philly.com:

In other news, rookie Joel Embiid tweeted out that he had signed his contract with the team, but sources close to the situation said he jumped the gun a little bit on that. The team isn’t ready to announce Embiid’s or any of the other rookie’s signings. That should be coming in the not-too-distant future.

It’s tough to see any real harm being done here, especially because teams never announce the actual terms of player contracts, and there’s a rookie scale in place that gives us a fairly small range of what the dollar amount might actually be. And, it’s not like there was any question as to whether or not Embiid would ultimately be signed.

But it is an example of why we can expect Embiid to slow down on Twitter once the season approaches — something even he himself seems to be well aware is coming.

Mario Hezonja, the No. 5 pick in this year’s draft, has never lacked for confidence. The Croatian guard made his pro debut in the Magic’s preseason game against the Hornets on Saturday and did this:

Between Hezonja, Elfrid Payton, Victor Oladipo and Aaron Gordon, the Magic have a nucleus of young players that has the potential to be a lot of fun. Even if they’re still a few years away from contending, they’re definitely going to be a League Pass favorite this year.

Preseason is only just getting underway and there’s already a potentially serious injury to report. In the game between the Hornets and Magic on Saturday night, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was taken to the locker room after suffering a right shoulder injury. The Hornets announced that he was then taken to an Orlando-area hospital for follow-up x-rays:

A few hours after the game, the Hornets announced that Kidd-Gilchrist has a dislocated shoulder:

Depending on the severity of the injury, he could miss a few weeks or a few months. Hopefully, it’s the shorter end of that timeline. We should know more on Sunday.
