That’s what happens when you play in the NBA for more than a decade, develop a great reputation for professionalism and then coach a mid-seeded team to the national title. At face value, Ollie has all the traits of a successful NBA head coach.
So, his phone must surely be ringing off the hook, right?
Shams Charania of RealGM:
Reading between the lines, this seems like a case of semantics and negotiating.
First of all, what defines “formal” contact? if the Lakers contact his agent to set up a meeting with Ollie, is that informal contact? Or is that even contact “with Ollie” at all?
Secondly, I wouldn’t read into this that Ollie lacks interest in coaching the NBA. I believe he also holds interest in coaching Connecticut, and this is a way to put a little pressure on the school to extend his contract.
If his personal deadline passes, hello NBA suitors. It’s an option Ollie can keep in his back pocket and then pull out whenever he wants.
