Billy Donovan

Report: Billy Donovan a Timberwolves coaching candidate

Tom Izzo, Fred Hoiberg and Stan Van Gundy appeared as coaching targets of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and with Rick Adelman officially retiring, a new name has emerged.

Marc Stein of ESPN:

Has enough time passed since 2007? That’s when the Orlando Magic hired Donovan only to see him return to Florida days later.

The parting agreement reportedly included a no-compete clause that kept Donovan from coaching in the NBA for five years, and that would have expired. But the bitter feelings haven’t necessarily. NBA teams won’t want to pursue a coach they fear is jerking them around.

Donovan has been remarkably successful at Florida, though. He’s led the Gators to four straight Elite Eights, and they have a 486-189 (.720) record under his watch. His demeanor seems relatively translatable to the NBA, too.

In many ways, he makes sense as a candidate for this job, but if he wants it, his chief task will be convincing Minnesota he’s serious about leaving Florida this time.

If you’re a Knicks fan, the positive is that at least Kristaps Porzingis tried to make a play.

But he was not going to stop the athletic Bradley Beal with a full head of steam, and the result was a Beal dunking over Porzingis as he tries to block the attempt.

Beal wasn’t sharp, scoring 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The Knicks has an efficient Carmelo Anthony and that got them the win.
