San Antonio Spurs v Denver Nuggets

NBA executives expect Nuggets to buy out Andre Miller if they don’t trade him

Andre Miller hasn’t returned to the Nuggets since his falling out with Brian Shaw, and it’s pretty clear Denver wants to trade the point guard.

But that won’t be easy.

Miller turns 38 next month, and he’s owed $1,647,059 the rest of this season and $2 million next season (if waived. If you want to keep him for next year, you must pay him $4,625,000.) Potential trade partners will look at those numbers and not only be wary of giving Denver an asset, but they might want to unload their own unfavorable contract on the Nuggets.

That’s why many NBA front-office members see Miller headed toward a buyout.

Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $50,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Thursday night’s games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $7,500. Starts at 8pm ET on Thursday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

If Miller becomes  a free agent, he’ll draw heavy interest. At a minimum contract – which would cost his team $291,297 for the rest of the season – he’s a bargain.

But for teams who wouldn’t top Miller’s preferred destinations, a trade is the only chance to get him. That’s the main reason a trade market for him exists.

Often, in cases like this, the player and his current team have already negotiated a buyout in case he’s not traded. That way, if the deadline passes without a deal, everyone can move on quickly.

So far, the only substantive accounts of the Matt Barnes-Derek Fisher altercation have come from anonymous sources.

The Knicks coach has deflected questions.

But Barnes is giving his account, at least of the lead-up.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:

It’s completely understandable that Barnes would act to ensure his children’s welfare.

And let’s say everything he said is true. It still leaves important questions unanswered.

Did Barnes – as he reportedly texted a friend he did – beat up Fisher and spit on his estranged wife, Gloria Govan? If so, why did Barnes deem that necessary to protect kids?

Gregg Popovich resting himself for Spurs game at Sacramento

Gregg Popovich said he wouldn’t coach in July.

Apparently, he’s taking off part of October, too.

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports:

It’s not that surprising to see Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Boris Diaw staying home. Veterans miss preseason games all the time just to rest. With the Spurs, it happens even in the regular season.

But it’s still a little strange to see the head coach sit out, even though Popovich also did it last year.

It makes sense, though. Who cares about this preseason game? If travelling less helps the 66-year-old Popovich stay fresh in the years ahead, that’s well worth it. Plus, it gets Messina a little extra experience. Some day, he might be the head coach.
