Pistons’ Bynum could be shut down for season due to hand

Will Bynum has had his moments for the Detroit Pistons this season — as a designated scorer coming off the bench he’s averaging 9.3 points a game but has had 13 games with more than 15 points including 23 against the Trail Blazers recently.

But he has been playing through pain in his hand since January and re-injured his hand Saturday. There’s an MRI coming but don’t be shocked if the Pistons shut him down for the season, reports the Detroit News.

“Every time I get hit, it stings for 30 seconds,” said Bynum, who’s been playing with the pain since January but never missed a game.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the soon-to-be free agent shut it down if the MRI reveals ligament damage. From his perspective, he’s got to be healthy for the summer when he’s looking for a new contract.

Bynum is going to get a new contract somewhere — he’s certainly earned it this season with a solid year — but that would be a better deal if teams are confident his hand is healthy.

The Pistons are deep with guards and no Bynum would just mean more Rodney Stuckey and Brandon Knight (who returned over the weekend).

If you’re a Knicks fan, the positive is that at least Kristaps Porzingis tried to make a play.

But he was not going to stop the athletic Bradley Beal with a full head of steam, and the result was a Beal dunking over Porzingis as he tries to block the attempt.

Beal wasn’t sharp, scoring 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The Knicks has an efficient Carmelo Anthony and that got them the win.
