And the hopes of thousands of Lakers fans are crushed. Little do they know this is what is best for them, such is their disappointment.
The Lakers attended the recent workout of Gilbert Arenas and even Kobe Bryant was good with bringing him in, but it’s not likely to happen according to the Los Angeles Times.
Although General Manager Mitch Kupchak attended a workout involving Arenas on Sunday at a Bel-Air practice court, a person familiar with the organization’s thinking but not authorized to discuss it publicly said the Lakers did not have serious interest in signing the three-time All-Star.
Arenas is probably the last fallback for the Lakers. Their ideal move would be a big one that sets the franchise up for beyond the Kobe era — meaning Dwight Howard — but shy of that they hope to land someone who can play the point and organize the team better than their current point guards. After his play in Orlando produced Derek Fisher caliber play and numbers, there’s little reason to expect Arenas to do that.
But, if nothing else materializes, it’s an option.
